Known issues:

A couple of taskbar icons not showing (thanks brock). These are minor and I won’t be fixing until the next release.

RELEASE NOTES (changes from 0.7 to 1.0) :

I decided to make the jump to 1.0 because I felt that (pending any bugs) this release deserved it. I have been molding and building fresh ROM over the last month from v0.1a all the way up til now. There have been 9 total releases, with a few other random things in between. I am proud of this version and I hope to take a break after this release to work on a kitchen.

Added: Boot animation is back + new boot screen + freshhhh sound (yes, it’s back. You know you missed it!)
- I’m putting this in bold: The new boot screen mimics a linux boot sequence. Don’t freak out.
Added: Totally transparent lock screen.
- A small note on this one — I’m not a huge fan of the “lock” image that we currently have on there, but it’s all that we could whip up really fast to show off the new lock screen. It looks good, but it’s just not great. Enjoy it for now, and submit images if you have any that you would like to see there instead.
Added: Tsowen task bar!
- So this task bar was actually put together by me (don’t complain to tsowen if you don’t like it haha), but the original icons were provided by tsowen. Please say thanks to him!
- I am well aware that not 100% of the system icons have been changed over. After spending 48 hours on the task of porting them over I decided that I better make sure people like it before I spend another 48 finishing it!
Added: Put “fresh rom” back in to the build.prop so that you could see what version you were running in Settings < About Phone < Build Number
Modified: Removed as many .odex files as possible by deodexing them, converting to classes.dex and injecting it in to the apk.
- Why? By doing so I was able to shave 25mb off of the extracted size of the system directory (you won’t notice the change in the .zip file). This was a way to remove 25mb worth of data without deleting a single thing. The package manager will handle creating odex files when needed and stores them on our data partition (this is what the dalvik-cache is). This also means it is easy for you to fix any issues you are having with certain programs without wiping the whole phone. This is something that you will see done on all the GSM roms, and I figure those guys know what they are doing!
- What does this mean? Just like the GSM roms, this is the “future” of rom development for us. However that also means that if you install an app pack that replaces stock apps, you may get FC’s. To resolve that you will either have to wait for the art guys to make new packs based off of these new apk’s, or you will need to clear your cache after installing the pack. You can use my app installer (download link is available on the right) to clear the cache easily.
Modified: Changed the setup script a bit to have it clear the cache on first boot like I had done in the past. This resolves errors for people coming from 1.29 (yea, they still exist. haha.). Except a long boot on first bootup after flash. 3-5 minutes.

LOVE the new ROMs. I installed .7 last night and my Hero was a completely different phone! Amazing how much faster it is now. Just installed 1.0 and the new notification bar is great. Keep up the good work!

  I can tell you that I didn’t intentionally take it out? But honestly I don’t do too much with video on my phone. How would you typically pull it up? Do you know what the package name is?

  That was the custom boot animation that I made and ran with the fresh boot sound. haha. I’ll be including a boot screen modifier in my next release of the app installer. Keep an eye out for it.

The ROM is good and I really like the new taskbar, however, I am really not feeling the Linux boot sequence. Can you create a custom boot animation and run that with the fresh sound?

First I love your roms, but seriously could you keep them stock for the most part and just have addon packs for things like the taskbar, lock screen etc. I’m all for modified icons and such, but I would like to choose them not forced to deal with them… Personally I use the Clear As A Bell theme, and what you have dumped into the rom doesn’t work for me. For these reasons I will not be upgrading to Fresh 1.0 and will stick with 0.7 until a better rom comes out.

  I appreciate the comment, however if I didn’t try out new things then it would just be the same thing over and over. And then it also would be my rom, one that you had previously loved. I am perfectly fine with the fact that I have included things people didn’t like. Because I put up a poll and give them a chance to vote and if enough people don’t like it, it gets removed. But I’m not going to avoid putting it in there in the first place just because I’m afraid someone won’t like it. This rom is all about trying new things, and that’s exactly what I do. It’s impossible to please everyone.
  
  With that said, a kitchen is in the works (but in the very early stages) by me and a couple of others. If you aren’t familiar with what a kitchen is, it basically allows you to pick and choose what you want and make your own custom rom.

Love the new rom, I especially love how often you release new ones. I love trying out new stuff so keep it up!

That being said, I think having a lock on the “clear lock” screen sort of defeats the purpose. Fact is, if I want a lock on my lock screen then I can just assign that image to be my lock screen. It’s already customizable in that fashion so I think it’s better to just leave it clear.

flipz, I totally understand where you’re coming from, it’s just that since there are so very few roms out there for us, yours was the only one that cut out the junk but allowed me to reinstall htc apps etc, while keeping a fairly stock feel. would it be possible to release an update.zip to get the stock taskbar back? That’s the major deal breaker for me, I imagine I could smash the new lock screen somehow, but from what I’ve read the taskbar has multiple places it hides etc.

Dude… Great ROM! Its quick and looks great! And IMHO, the icons and especially the Freshhh sound at boot up are all what makes your rom yours! You’ve already created some really nice more stock like roms in .6 and .7. Upward and onward I say! Thanks for your hard work and time in sharing your talents with the rest of us! You Da Man!

Awesome ROM! It really makes the phone a lot faster.
I’m still a bit ambivalent about the taskbar, but I’ll give it a try… (The icons certainly look nice and shiny. I’m just not sure if it’ll be distracting.)

On an unrelated note, is there any way to set the window animations back to normal (i.e. the slide animation)?

just a heads up…astro force closes on me every time I try to access it. Im not sure if this happens with anybody else. Also the weather under my htc clock (like the one in the screenshot) decides that it doesnt wanna show up unless I update it. Other than that…wow. Thanks a bunch flipz…Great ROM!!!

i dont know if its just me but the boot takes a lot longer, and i get the feeling its frozen,
personally i would rather go back to the original start up.

  The boot times are not at all affected by the boot animation. The only way to change the boot time with that is to completely disable them in the boot.img-kernel which is a debugging technique. I tried that in 0.7 and everyone voted to bring animations back. And as long as it’s flashing “wait” then it’s loading and not frozen. If it starts boot looping then you’ll know it.

Any chance of getting and update fresh water theme that will work with 1.0? I tried installing it but got fc’s continually after reboot and clearing cache they still occurred.

  Yea the FC’s are caused by them having the old odex files. If you did a cache clear (it is an option available in the app installer) then it should fix it. Freshlyill is working on an updated version, but it’s been slow going.

ahhh duuuude ahahah.love it…last night i was reading about this ROM…i stayed up til like 2 am tryna figure this out…i failed.was bummed cause i had to wake up in 3 hours to go work..fuckk! lol…

got home about an hour ago today,re-did it,on the instructions u have to root the HERO…..n it worked…im using the hero right now…love this phone nowwwww haha..keep up the great work guys.for sure..peace

Flip – It would be awesome if you were able to raise the size of the stock mms’s memory to more then a 1mb. It sucks that we have to use 3rd party app just send a freakin’ picture that we took on our camera..

  Modifying the stock apps isn’t really possible because they are closed source. As you already noticed it’s not a limitation of Android (because it works fine on other apps) but is a built in limitation of the stock app. I’ll look in to it, but I don’t think there will be much I can do.

Flipz,

I flashed your 1.0 Rom to my Hero last Wednesday, since I have had 100% Awake time no matter what. I have removed all third party apps to no avail. Suggestions?

  There isn’t too much I can say other than it’s an app you have installed. There are definitely no sleep issues. If it won’t ever go under 100% then you can do a nandroid backup to when it was sleeping (and confirm it is) and then flash back to fresh 1.0. Or start all the way over by doing a stock RUU flash and then coming back.
  
  This is such a hot topic but I can promise you it’s not the rom… it’s something else on the phone. I think I should make a whole post about wake time and what it means.

This ROM is fantastic. I just wanted to say that after being a MoDaCo guy for so long, I am finally convinced that this is the superior ROM. There just isn’t as many updates being provided, and I worry the original creator has abandoned the project! You though Flipz, you are an Android God amongst Men. Thank you so much for all of your excellent contributions, and I truly cannot wait to see what comes next (And by the looks of it, its Eclair you l33t haxor you!)

I think my cheat sheet may be required to adopt a bias towards Fresh ROM if this kind of magic continues going forward… Just a simple opinion I’d like to provide though about additions within your ROM…

While I like the fact that so many unnecessary things are removed, there are also some things added that I do not believe are necessary. Thankfully, you provided a De-Fresh that really helped get rid of the biggest annoyances, but I still think you should keep the ROM from adding too many things. In the end, most of us just want the fastest and best experience from a ROM that doesn’t necessarily look different but functions much better than factory spec.

Oh… and you can totally keep the Linux boot up animation, that’s awesome! But those taskbar icons… It’s kind of like when they add color to Mac Title-Bar icons… seems to throw off the Chi of the whole UI.

  Thanks for the input John. If you have been following Fresh ROM at all (or looked through the release notes) then you’ll see that I like trying new things and then allow the users to vote on whether they like it or not. If the overall vote is no, then it goes. However my main reason for it is to try out new things. Prior to me messing with the taskbar no one had touched it. Now I have walked 5 people through how to do it and some are coming up with great new ones. So it’s really more to inspire people and show them what they can do.
  
  My kitchen will be coming soon (I hope. haha). This will allow you to totally customize your experience. So keep an eye out for it, and thanks for the write up!

Awesome job goes out to all who have worked on this rom and continue to do so. The more I play with Droid, the more I am in love with it (as long as they keep it open source it can only get better – I hope) At least you have options and are not stuck with what the cell phone companies want you to have.

Anywhoooo – On the wireless tether thing ( I might have missed this somewhere but I cant find it) even though I enable the encryption, it comes up unsecured to my computer and I don’t have to enter a key to connect. Any ideas or am I smoking crack (again )

    Ok. After more googling on the encryption thing. (It pays to put in the correct search phrase I guess.) It’s not a FRESH rom problem. Not like I have to worry about a neighbor from across the street being able to access the wireless on my phone anyhow. Again, thanks for the hard work.

      Well I could have told you that it wasn’t the rom’s fault. haha
      
      As for understanding the code… the depends entirely on how deep you want to get. Just extracting out the rom on to your computer and playing with it will give you a basic understanding of the file system. Poking around in adb and the debugger within the sdk will give you a better idea of the kernel and what’s going on behind the scenes.
      
      And reading http://developer.android.com top to bottom will allow you to really learn what’s going on.

Hi,

Can anyone report if this fresh rom resolves the 2 ring lag problem? I mean, as the caller, you hear 2 rings on your side, until you can actually hear the first ring on the Hero.

  This isn’t a bug in fresh rom. I feel like 2 rings is pretty much the norm. The only thing you can do to try and change it is to change your polling rate (how often the phone checks the tower for an incoming call). The lower you go, the faster your battery will drain but the quicker it will ring on your end.
  
  Also if you are using google voice then there’s nothing at all you can do it.

Thanks flipz – yeah, but that is weird. I called my friend’s dumb phone yesterday. His phone rang in 1 ring. I think I recall my Centro ringing earlier as well. so I thought it was more Hero specific…

but great job on your ROM. I guess you didn’t get any rest last night, cuz you just came out with 1.1!

hi-i just installed the 1.0 rom and i seem to be having a problem with the taskbar battery level…. it never seems to go down from 100%. i have a battery widget on the desktop that is though, so it’s something to do the reporting on that icon. has anyone else seen this as well?

Ever since I loaded this version, I have been getting notices that my SD card has been unexpectedly removed. It is a remote possibility it is Fresh. Much more likely an app, the card itself, or something else. Just wondering if anyone else have had this problem.
