From 4.1.0 to 4.2.0:

  • Updated to the latest Sprint/HTC OTA (2.17.651.5)
  • CIQ has been completely removed in this release, including the kernel drivers. 100% CarrierIQ free.
    • HTC Did leave their own logging system in place (1 apk, 1 binary, 1 lib) so I stripped that out
  • Disabled GPS icon so that it isn’t visible when GPS is disabled to clean up the taskbar (thanks jschisurf)
  • Removing dancing droid in phone as there were a large number of complaints of slow downs and other issues
  • All the usual fresh goodies were re-done for the new OTA. A non-all-inclusive list:
    • deodex
    • zipalign
    • pngopt
    • 7-in-1 reboot menu
    • usb debugging icon disabled
    • flattened rosie widgets / rosie super scroll
    • camera modifications to add extra features
    • sms/mms modifications to add extra features
    • disabled pagination in rosie
    • battery % in taskbar
    • unlocked sprint hotspot
    • bottom led panel dimmed
    • additional quick settings
    • gtalk v1.3 with voice and video chat
  • Other stuff. See change log for full list of changes in fresh and for links to credit for any mods that were original ported from elsewhere

  • Why am I getting FC’s on gmail/market/voice search/whatever?
    • FC’s can be a common issue when /system/app contains an app that you already have on /data/app. So if you get a FC on gmail, the market, or something similar, then it can generally be fixed 99.99% of the time by either wiping that particular apps data (Settings < Manage Applications < All < YOUR APP < Clear Data), or going in and uninstalling it which will actually force it to use the one /system/app.
    • Or, of course, can be fixed 100% of the time by doing a full data wipe before installing! I have verified this rom as 100% FC free (at boot at least) so if you have issues, it’s your particular setup.
  • Why do I get invalid signature when flashing?
    • This zip is signed the same as I’ve signed every other rom for the last 2.5 years but was getting invalid signature from TWRC 1.1.1. So make sure signature checking is disabled. You can compare the md5 below to make sure your download is good though.
  • Is this Ice Cream Sandwich? It says it’s version 4.x?
    • No. This is version 4.x of Fresh Rom. The Android version is always in my change log and unless it’s tagged as a dev rom, will always be the newest official OTA, or possibly a beta tag for a leaked OTA.
  • How do I setup V6 SuperCharger?
  • How do I remove Carrier IQ / CIQ?
  • Every time I reboot I’m getting some “Tell HTC” prompt, how do I stop this?
    • Menu < Settings < About Phone < Tell HTC < Uncheck “Report errors to HTC”

I always listen to the community as a whole and if enough people want something then I will generally add it to my rom. So feel free to ask. However if it’s something that only a few people want then I request that you do it yourself and submit a mod/theme/patch for the others to use! :)

From 4.0.6 to 4.1.0:

  • Fixed market not allowing you to purchase apps
  • Flattened rosie widgets (thanks hamdir)
  • Dancing droid for incoming phone calls when they don’t have a contact picture (thanks LeeDroid and SteelH)
    • I haven’t had any issues with this but some are reporting issues with a delay in answering the phone. Grab an unmodified copy from Fresh Updater if you have issues. Also do me a favor and report it so that I can remove it if too many are having issues.
  • Removed Carrier IQ intent actions
    • This is mostly just a cosmetic thing to clean up all the errors in logcat of actions trying to write to ciq
    • It however will and should have a positive impact on both battery, and the speed of the phone itself
    • Actions like smsnotify (where any incoming texts are sent over to ciq) happen before you even get the real sms notification on your phone, so removing actions like this should speed things up
    • This also allows for a lower score (by 100 points in the case of voodoo) on CIQ detection apps. The only traces left now are drivers embedded in the kernel itself which I can’t remove. I always have and always will use the stock kernel so they have to stay there. But this is just like the fact that your computer has thousands of drivers installed that it never uses. They do nothing and hurt nothing.
    • Keep in mind that CIQ is still 100% removed and gone. Your phone logs nothing and reports nothing. I’m simply cleaning up all of the iqagent.action’s.
  • Updated Market to 3.4.4
  • Updated Google Maps to 6.0.3
  • Updated Sprint Visual Voicemail to 5.2.0.24

    • NOTE: If you don’t see espresso then you probably aren’t on the default “HTC” skin. Open up your settings and then skins and change it to the one titled “HTC.” The preview picture will show the espresso bar.
  • Created a new skin called “HTC Stock (Fresh)” which is the old default theme that came with the phone because i replaced the default HTC with espresso. So if you don’t like Espresso you can easily change back in skin picker. Just look for it.
  • Downgraded busybox to 1.18.2 to resolve some scripting issues
  • Updated SuperUser to 3.0.7
  • Updated vending/market to 3.3.12

Almost 8 months ago I successfully removed Carrier IQ from Fresh Evo 4.0, the first release for the Evo that was based on gingerbread. I have removed it on every rom since.

So the question remains… how do I remove Carrier IQ from my phone? If you’re using Fresh Rom, then you don’t have to! The work has already been done for you; 8 months ago. This includes Fresh Evo, Fresh Evo 3d, and Fresh Shift.

Your phone is totally clean and spy free.

I decided to write this very quick how to on using it. If you have any further questions or issues with it then please visit the original thread for it! I didn’t write it and can’t provide support for it. Smile This is just a very basic how to with minimal explanations on what it’s actually doing. It’s only to help people set it up.

The commands that you’ll be running are as follows:

  1. adb shell
  2. cd /system/xbin
  3. V6_SuperCharger_u8.sh [case sensitive!]
  4. 0
  5. 2
  6. 16 [reboots phone]

To verify that it worked: repeat steps 1-4, then verify that it states “Current Values MATCH Prior SuperCharge!”

To celebrate I figured this would be a good place to link to my imgur album which has some fresh wallpapers that I made real quick while trying to decide on a default wallpaper for the evo 3d. As I make more I’ll continue to update to that album, so check back later. I also made a new boot sound. Smile I will NOT be replacing my default “freshhh” because this new one isn’t as simple as that one, but I still like it.

    • NOTE: If you don’t see espresso then you probably aren’t on the default “HTC” skin. Open up your settings and then skins and change it to the one titled “HTC.” The preview picture will show the espresso bar.
  • Created a new skin called “HTC Stock (Fresh)” which is the old default theme that came with the phone because i replaced the default HTC with espresso. So if you don’t like Espresso you can easily change back in skin picker. Just look for it.
  • Downgraded busybox to 1.18.2 to resolve some scripting issues

  • Why am I getting FC’s on gmail/market/voice search/whatever?
    • FC’s can be a common issue when /system/app contains an app that you already have on /data/app. So if you get a FC on gmail, the market, or something similar, then it can generally be fixed 99.99% of the time by either wiping that particular apps data (Settings < Manage Applications < All < YOUR APP < Clear Data), or going in and uninstalling it which will actually force it to use the one /system/app.
    • Or, of course, can be fixed 100% of the time by doing a full data wipe before installing! I have verified this rom as 100% FC free (at boot at least) so if you have issues, it’s your particular setup.
  • Why do I get invalid signature when flashing?
    • This zip is signed the same as I’ve signed every other rom for the last 2.5 years but was getting invalid signature from TWRC 1.1.1. So make sure signature checking is disabled. You can compare the md5 below to make sure your download is good though.
  • Is this Ice Cream Sandwich? It says it’s version 4.x?
    • No. This is version 4.x of Fresh Rom. The Android version is always in my change log and unless it’s tagged as a dev rom, will always be the newest official OTA, or possibly a beta tag for a leaked OTA.

I always listen to the community as a whole and if enough people want something then I will generally add it to my rom. So feel free to ask. However if it’s something that only a few people want then I request that you do it yourself and submit a mod/theme/patch for the others to use! :)

  • Android market gives an error when attempting to purchase applications.
    • Download the patch “Android Market Fix” using Fresh Updater under the “mods” section.

I didn’t know enough to do anything about it back then as I was brand new to Android (I didn’t successfully remove CIQ until Fresh Evo 4.0.0.4 Beta back in April) but I just thought it would be fun to copy/paste the article here for nostalgia purposes. :)

The post back then got only 4336 views and 4 replies but is something that has turned in to one of the most talked about subjects today.

Ok so this is more of a joke than anything, but I thought this was pretty interesting. My assumption is that this is an application that just requires SenseUI / the entire HTC experience to work or something like that, but the name of it is a little strange! They probably shouldn’t call it it a check-in service!!

Let me say one thing. This is the exact reason that it can be a very bad idea to install applications that don’t come from the market (aka unknown sources).Those applications are not signed by Android and therefore can act in ways that they shouldn’t. If one of those applications were to gain access to this service then they could pull ALL of your information.

With that said… please don’t turn this in to a scare thread. HTC is NOT watching you (I hope ). Obviously every part of the HTC experience will require access to every part of your phone. If they didn’t get access to it then SenseUI wouldn’t work! Please visit http://developer.android.com if you have any questions on how programming with Android works. I’m only posting this for your information.

I hope this thread lightens up this forum a little bit. Right now it’s just filled with threats to HTC and Sprint about the battery life. 

If only I knew then what we know now we may have been able to stop all of this! Haha. Silly innocent me thinking that HTC wasn’t watching us. At least I threw an “I hope” in there!

for your Sprint CDMA Evo Shift!

This rom is long over due. I released a beta many months ago that had some issues (some people couldn’t boot) and then my life got super busy and I never got back to it. Well I’m back and this version has been tested extensively! There is more to come with this rom as I get more in to the shift, so keep an eye out.

Changes from 4.0 beta (really old) to 4.1.0:
  • Newest OTA from Sprint/HTC - 2.76.651.5
  • Stock kernel (2.6.35.10 #1) modified only to allow root/remount/boot scripts/CIQ strip
  • Stripped Carrier IQ (copy/paste from previous change log as this is still fairly new to most people):
    • Carrier IQ (aka CIQ, or just IQ) is a market research tool used by Sprint/HTC to see what the phones are being used for. You can find out more about Carrier IQ on their website.
    • Now there is a huge group of people out there that would tell you this is Sprint/HTC spying on us, and they are right. You can see an example of what type of information is gathered by looking at a sample report from Carrier IQ. It is essentially spyware and is tied in to practically every HTC application on our phone.
    • This isn’t new news and really isn’t a secret. Carriers gathering this information helps them see how the phones are being used and how they can improve them in the future. I didn’t decide to remove it because I have a tin foil hat on and I’m worried about what they’re collecting, although those people will certainly benefit. :) I chose to remove it because it has a number of services that are constantly running in the background and chew up quite a bit of CPU (and battery) at times.
    • While I haven’t gone as far as to remove the calls to it from every single application on the phone I have completely disabled and removed the service from the ramdisk, the binaries, and the libs. Thus if you happen to be the type that watches logcat you will see some errors saying individual applications can’t reach the service. Nothing to worry about.

If you are experiencing issues:

  • If any app is FC’ing then simply open Settings < Manage Applications < All < YOUR APP < Clear Data . After that everything should work for you.
  • If you have tried all of that and are still having issues then you need to go in to recovery and do a full data wipe and flash and all will be fine.

Fair warning: if you ask me something that is already answered in the forum, the change log, or these release notes, then I’m going to ignore it. Sorry.
