Poll: Is Streaming Audio Better in Fresh Evo 3.2?
Fresh Evo is currently a donor only download while it’s in testing so this is only for people that have used it. This version contains an updated version of the stagefright framework which should resolve the issue in Evo’s official 2.2 where streaming audio (like Pandora) don’t sound very good. I’ve heard from most people that it is fixed but I haven’t had a definite answer from someone that had the issue before, and doesn’t have it anymore. I wanted to run a quick poll before the official release so I know. I don’t have a decent pair of headphones and I’m not exactly an audiophile so I didn’t really notice an audio quality issue in the first place. That’s why I’m asking you guys.
Please only vote if you actually have an opinion on it. Don’t vote no if you aren’t sure Thanks!

No problem. That was one of the reasons I flash the new version. I like stock too much to switch to Fresh Rom full time, but yours have always been my favorite custom Roms. This new one is really nice, I can’t wait for the MR to come to all Evos. Anyways, very stable and audio was definitely fixed. Very excited.

Yes, the 3.2 fresh definitely improved audio with Slacker over 3G. I have been using Slacker for a few years and just got an Evo about a month ago. With Android 2.1 it sounded normal. Up until now, it sounded very poor over 3G with all 2.2 roms. This has fixed that.
Although, I still have issues with it randomly skipping to the next song before the current song finishes. I also am bothered that notifications interrupt playback when it used to just fade playback down. Both of these issues did not show up until froyo.
Thanks for your work!

I can confirm 100% that the sound quality is improved with the 3.2 ROM. I notice the night and day difference before when I would turn off stagefright, and the terrible sound is no longer an issue. One thing I noticed though, and this might be placebo effect, but it seems like the volume is not as strong as 2.1 or 2.2 with the build prop modification. I feel like I have to turn up my volume to 80% to get what I used to get at around 50-60% before. Also, it seems a bit brighter sound, not quite as much on the low end. This last bit of observation is completely subjective, however, so take it with a grain of salt. Rest easy knowing that the “distorted” sound that was on bar with a super low bit rate is no longer an issue.

Ok, audiophile here. i think that with 3.2 there is still a notable difference with pandora with stagefright on vs off. I think it might be improved some over 3.1.0.2. What I notice is that with stagefright player on, some of the depth of the stereo audio is lost. this is the most significant difference. also note that there is still more of an overcompression type hit on the audio quality with stagefright on – i.e. voices sound a little tinnier, and on the fringes of all the audio is just the tinniest bit of static.
listened on my old panasonic high quality amp with bose speakers. i’m 29, but still have hearing in >20,000 hertz on testing (i.e. i can hear those annoying high pitched sounds that only teenagers are supposed to be able to hear). i was also a amateur recording musician and have spent months editing recording tracks and mixing music. some of this could be placebo, but I listened to about 10 different songs each way, both classical and rock. YMMV.

Definitely a difference here. I noticed on previous roms that Wifi played at normal quality, 3g played horribly using pretty decent headphones, and using the input on my Kenwood deck in my car on Pandora. With the build.prop modified it sounded decent either way.
3.2 dropped, and I didnt have to modify my build.prop. Hell, I didnt even flash any “aftermarket” kernel I was so pleased. I listen to Pandora 8=10 hours a day at work, so it matters to me. I say 2 thumbs up on this one.

I use Pandora a lot. With Android 2.1 it sounded great. With the OTA of 2.2, it sounded horrible. With Fresh Evo 3.2 it sounds good again.
I agree with tatnai that it is possible that it is not quite as good as in 2.1, as I pick up a hint of tinny audio or shallow audio (no low end bass) every so often. I also wonder if it is just the source files that Pandora uses.

I am flashing this ROM right now but I definitely know what audio problems you’re talking about. I noticed streaming Pandora in my car at ‘high’ quality sounds like garbage. I’ll be back to vote after I test this.
note: both Pandora and Youtube sounded like crap but XiiaLive still sounded fine with stock 2.2 (hope that helps).
Be back later.

I think that Pandora changed how they streamed to help fix the issue. So it doesn’t sound much different. However, mSpot was severely effected. If you plugged it into normal speakers or halfway decent headphones, you could easily tell the quality was absolutely horrible. 3.2 fixed it for sure. Tried mSpot and huge difference. Almost CD quality now.
