News

Hello, World

If you are seeing this then the new server is online and functional. Hooray!! Let’s take a minute to say goodbye to the old server and recognize what she brought us:

  • Took in over 2,300 comments
  • Greeted between 3,000 and 12,000 unique visitors/day
  • Served up nearly 1.5 TERABYTES of data every month, with as much as 200 GIGABYTES in a 24 hour period on release days
  • Handled just under 60,000 total downloads, starting with Fresh 0.1

So what went on during the site maintainance? Well probably not much that you all will notice, but I’ll share anyways  :)

  • Upgraded from a generic shared hosting account to a Virtual Private Server with root (giving me the ability to edit my roms right on the server including zipping and signing them — makes for much faster bug fixing!)
  • Upgraded WordPress
  • Upgraded the theme
  • Screwed around with android while I was supposed to be changing DNS servers
  • Upgraded the URL shortener
  • Added a mobile theme for easier browsing from your phone (seriously, why didn’t I do that sooner. Thanks for reminding me James. :) )
  • I think there was more

Everyone say hi to let me know the site is live for you!

Edit: Currently the downloads are still getting pulled off the old site because the subdomain had it’s own forward. But it’s propagating now and you guys shouldn’t be at all affected by it. The links have landed!

Site Maintainance Status: Done

Hey all. I just wanted to let you know that I am working on transferring this site to a new host. While I am going to do everything I can to minimize downtime, I figured I should make this post just in case it does happen. The transfer shouldn’t take very long, however up to this point Godaddy has taken days to do things. So for all I know I’ll change the name servers and they won’t process that action for days. Everything will be much better once the change is made!  :)

Edit:  Oops, I turned comments off for a little bit (which I WILL be doing on purpose later tonight). Actually I used a plug-in to do it and it didn’t do it right. But anyways all is better now.

Update: 2:30am. Comments are now closed site-wide while I backup and transfer the database.

Update: 5:50am. Well I got distracted doing a ton of other things and I just got around to changing the name servers. :) I had added them to my old host a few days ago, I just had them down the priority list. So this shouldn’t take to long to start showing up.

Update: 7:22am. nslookup is showing the new name servers on 4 out of the 5 unique internet connections I have. Should be going live for everyone soon! Keep in mind you may need to do ipconfig /flushdns . Although if you can’t see this then you’ll never know you should do that.  :-P

Benchmarking Sprint 2.20.651.1 Based Roms

A common thing that I read on the forums is how much faster one rom is over another. Someone will claim that their rom runs much faster than others or just users will say that this one is better than another. One of my very first contributions to XDA was benchmarking every rom that was available for the HTC Mogul at that time. I decided to do the same thing for all HTC Hero roms based on the Sprint 2.20.651.1 leak. This consists of: DamagedCake 1.2b, DamageControl v2.05, DarchVanilla v2.1, Fresh Rom 2.0d, RegawMOD v2.0.2p, and untouched Stock.

Follow Me on Twitter for Updates

I am a long time user of twitter on a personal level, but I don’t tweet about android stuff on there. Ever since I started this site I have debated on creating a twitter account. Up til now I had decided not to because I had too many other things to keep up with already however due to multiple requests I have decided to bite the bullet and go for it. :) I will not be using that account for support requests so you still need to bring your questions here, however I will update with smaller updates that aren’t blog-worthy.

I put an updated pic of the kitchen up there, just for the twitter fans. Check it out now!

News: Sprint HTC Hero Kernel Released and Compiled [Updated]

HTC has finally released the source for our kernel! We still don’t know if this includes 100% of everything because they aren’t required to release closed source code. There is currently speculation that the power saving module they used is closed source which means the phone won’t sleep properly while the screen is off (that brings back bad memories).

I just wanted to post and say that I have successfully compiled it (thanks to toast for the pep talk :) ) and I am currently running a beta of fresh rom that is using the new kernel. While it is 100% stock and no changes have been made to it, this test will help show what we can do with it! Keep an eye out for exciting things.
